I got my introduction to Darlene Shrugg last Friday night at The Silver Dollar Room. They're a Toronto supergroup featuring Slim Twig, his Tropics cohort Simone TB (Fiver), U.S. Girls' Meg Remy, and Ice Cream's Amanda Crist and Carlyn Bezic.
I loved the wicked guitar sounds and super high energy. It's often hard to get a real sense of a band and their sound when standing up close to the stage. You don't hear vocals that well and you get more stage volume than curated mix.
I caught whiffs of 70s, notably glam and hard rock with a bit of funk. Overall, they sound "big". I loved the drummer, especially the crazy rolls while staying rock solid in their last song. This band definitely goes on the "see this band again" list.
They've only got one song out now, so check it out.
